After graduating, Hunter volunteered as a Jesuit at a church in Portland, Oregon for a year. A year got completed and Hunter moved back to Wilmington to work with Delaware-based banking holding company, MBNA America as a lawyer and was also appointed as the deputy campaign manager for his father’s Senate re-election bid.

While he was still working at MBNA America, he was promoted till he became the executive vice president of the organization. Hunter left MBNA in the year 1998 and thereafter was employed into an office in Clinton Administration as the director of policy.
